GUIDED BONE REGENERATION
What is guided bone regeneration?
GBR, or guided bone regeneration, is a method of bone regeneration that involves using physical means, such as barrier membranes, to isolate the anatomic site where the bone is regenerated. The objective is to guide the formation of bone and stop other tissues, such as connective tissue, from getting in the way of the process (osteogenesis). The alveolar ridge can be augmented through guided bone regeneration where there has been bone resorption. Since many patients' remaining bone is insufficient to support an implant without GBR procedures, stable implant placement is impossible for these individuals. Existing alveolar ridge deficiencies frequently compromise the ideal placement of dental implants.
Several potential causes for insufficient bone for implant placement include developmental abnormalities, trauma, and teeth removal. Resorption of the alveolar bone occurs in both the horizontal and vertical dimensions after tooth extraction, reducing bone volume. Bone augmentation procedures have been refined to restore missing bone and re-establish normal bone contours successfully. Guided bone regeneration (GBR) excludes nonideal cell types from the healing process by using a barrier membrane to promote the growth of slower-growing bone cells. As a result of the exclusion of the structure of the membrane, osteoprogenitor cells can repopulate the graft site. According to the research, up to 40% of dental implant sites require GBR procedures as part of the patient's rehabilitation.
How is guided bone regeneration done?
Dr Jeftha will use the factors and principles critical to regenerating bony contours for implant placement, increasing the likelihood of success, and reducing the risk of complications. Implant placement in an area with insufficient bony ridge may compromise function, support, and aesthetics. When a bone graft is successful, cells from the recipient site's bony walls and blood vessels migrate to the developing graft site to aid healing.
When there is more space between the bony surfaces and the outer edges of the graft, angiogenesis and cell migration, become more of a challenge. Therefore, the ideal treatment for bony defects is determined by the specific type of defect and the required amount of bone growth. The process of guided bone regeneration can be done in two distinct ways. The first is the simultaneous method, in which the implant and GBR are placed simultaneously. The second method is a staged procedure that involves GBR before implants are inserted. No matter the technique, barrier membranes are crucial to the GBR process.
