ORAL CANCER SCREENING
What is oral cancer?
Indicators of oral cancer include a persistent sore or growth in the mouth. Cancers of the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, hard and soft palate, sinuses, and pharynx are all considered forms of oral cancer. The most prevalent form of cancer in the head and neck region is oral cancer. A lack of prompt diagnosis and treatment can be fatal. The prognosis for and response to treatment of oral cancer are greatly enhanced when detected at an early stage. However, most people are only diagnosed when it is too late to treat their condition effectively. You will have a better chance of receiving an early diagnosis if you maintain regular dental and medical check-ups and learn to recognise the signs of the condition.
What is oral cancer screening?
A dentist or doctor can perform a screening for oral cancer to detect any cancerous or precancerous conditions. Screening for oral cancer helps find any signs of the disease at an early stage. Most dentists examine your mouth to check for oral cancer. Dr Jeftha may order additional diagnostic tests to pinpoint the areas where abnormal cells are located in your mouth. Performing oral cancer screening at every dental hygiene visit is prudent. Dr Jeftha may refer you for additional testing to determine the cause of oral cancer-like symptoms he discovers. Remember that suspicious results do not always indicate cancer. Early detection of cancer decreases the risk of treatment-related side effects. This is why it's so important to take preventative measures and attend regular dental check-ups.
The goal of oral cancer screening
Screening for oral cancer is performed so that any developing cancers or precancerous lesions can be removed before they spread throughout the body. An increasing number of people have recently been diagnosed with oral and throat cancer. The human papillomavirus (HPV) is linked to an alarming rise in the incidence of these cancers. If you are concerned about your risk of cancer, please do not hesitate to discuss these concerns with Dr Jeftha .
What is the oral cancer screening process?
Dr Jeftha will inspect the patient for lumps, bumps, discolouration, ulcers, or other abnormalities. The essential parts of a complete oral cancer exam, including the face, neck, lips, jaw, cheeks, and nasal and oral cavities, will be thoroughly examined. If you've got any sores or discoloured areas in your mouth, Dr Jeftha will examine these areas. Dr Jeftha uses a mirror and bright light to examine your oral cavity. As with any regular physical exam, he will also use a tongue depressor to look at the top of your mouth and the floor of your stomach. Dr Jeftha will conduct a thorough physical examination, which includes palpating your face, mouth, and neck for any unusual lumps. All abnormalities in the mouth that could lead to cancer can only be found through a physical inspection of the oral structures. Dr Jeftha can feel for any hard lumps of tissue so he can remove them. While oral cancer pain is possible, it is typically not present in the initial stages of the disease.
Types of oral cancer screening tools
A screening for oral cancer may involve using specialised examination tools by your dentist or oral surgeon. Screening methods involve the following:
- A painless method of cell extraction is the "oral brush biopsy."
- A fluorescence-based oral assessment system for the detection of abnormal tissue.
- A mouth rinse is used to aid in the visual inspection of the oral tissues during an oral lesion screening.
