ROOT CANAL TREATMENTS

What is a root canal?

The root canal refers to a type of dental treatment that aims to repair an infected or damaged tooth. Your tooth is made up of a crown (the portion above the gums) and a root (the portion below the gums). Deep within the tooth, a portion of nerve tissue and blood vessels is found, known as the pulp. The pulp nourishes the tooth and lubricates the surrounding tissues. When this portion of the tooth becomes infected or damaged, a root canal may be indicated.

Root Canal Treatment

Endodontic therapy, or root canal therapy, aims to repair and save damaged or infected teeth instead of removing them. Typically, you will be awake under local anaesthetic while you undergo a root canal. During the procedure, a tiny hole is made at the top of the tooth to allow the dentist access to the innermost layer of the tooth. The infected pulp of the tooth is removed, and the canals are cleaned out during this process, hence the term "root canal”. Once the pulp is cleaned, antibiotics will be applied, and a temporary filling will close the incision at the top of the tooth. You can expect some pain and sensitivity after a root canal; however, you will be prescribed painkillers and antibiotics to manage any discomfort.

When is root canal treatment necessary?

Various factors, such as severe tooth decay or dental injuries, can lead to an infection developing in the centre of the tooth. If inflammation or infection in the pulp of the tooth is not treated, severe pain can develop. Other signs that may indicate the need for a root canal include:

  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Persistent sensitivity to hot or cold foods
  • Swelling in the gums
  • Pain when chewing

FAQ

1Is a root canal painful?
Our objective is to make dental procedures painless. We use sufficient anaesthetic to ensure that you are entirely numbed during any dental procedure, courtesy of modern medicine. As soon as the anaesthetic wears off, you will be given painkillers to alleviate any pain or discomfort. To make you as comfortable as possible, we will inform you of what to expect. Typically, root canal procedures are less painful than the symptoms preceding the procedure.
2How long does a root canal take?
An uncomplicated root canal procedure can take between thirty and sixty minutes or longer, depending on the tooth and the extent of repair needed.
3How long will recovery be?
The recovery period between procedures is relatively short and may last only a few days, depending on the extent of your treatment. We guide you through what to expect at every stage of your treatment.
4How many root canal procedures will I need?
Dr Patel and his team will give you comprehensive details pertaining to your root canal treatments. Typically, you would need one to two visits with us, depending on the state of your tooth and the extent of the damage.
5How long does a root canal last?
With great oral hygiene and routine dental examinations, your root canal can last a while. However, bear in mind that the success of any root canal treatment does depend on the tooth that received the root canal treatment and the extent of damage to that particular tooth.
6What do I need to do after a root canal treatment?
Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is essential to any dental aftercare. However, Dr Patel and his team will walk you through every necessary step. Typically, it would help if you took extra precautions around a tooth with a recent root canal. Daily flossing can help prevent future infections. Reduce your consumption of sugary foods and beverages. Schedule regular dental cleanings to maintain healthy, infection-free teeth.
