What is a biopsy?

A biopsy is a tissue sample taken from the body for further analysis. Dr Jeftha should advise a biopsy when a preliminary examination reveals abnormal tissue. The suspicious area may be spotted during a physical examination or an internal imaging test. Tests performed on a biopsied sample can diagnose a myriad of oral diseases, including cancer. Although imaging tests like CT scans and MRIs can aid in detecting masses and other forms of abnormal tissue, they cannot distinguish between cancerous and noncancerous cells. A biopsy is required to collect cells for further examination to diagnose most cancer types. Some oral and oropharyngeal cancers and precancerous conditions are discovered during routine examinations, but the vast majority are detected after the patient reports a symptom to their doctor or dentist. The next step is a biopsy if cancer is suspected. A biopsy is the only way to detect the presence of cancer in the oral cavity or pharynx.
